Built in the 1950s,the factory was a major industrial project designed by East Geman archiects backed by Soviet aid.The factory’s decline started in the 1980s,jst as Beijing’s contemporary art scene began to emerge. The massive relocation of pollutant factories outside the city in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games has further accelerated the decline of the area’s manufactuning roots and allwed for the incubation of modern art.
As the factory was designed by some German experts, it had an architecture style, which was called “Bauhaus” (Its main design ideal is bringing the technical and aesthetic property of new materials and new structure into effect; designing simply and composing pictures vividly with flexibility). Attracted by the unique architectural style and vast spaces, more and more artists and designers began to trickle in and settle their workshops there since 2001. They make full use of its original style and transform them into unique art exhibition centers and creation workshops. Now Beijing 798 Art Zone gathers a number of celebrities of art and culture in fashion. Many international art exhibitions are held there. It has received extensive attention from all over the world in recent years. Now it is one of the landmarks of Beijing Urban Culture.
