Dianchi Lake, spanning an area of 306 square kilometers (118 square miles), graces the southwestern outskirts of Kunming City. Its crescent shape stretches 39 kilometers (24 miles) from north to south and approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) from west to east, nestled at an elevation of 1,886 meters (6,186 feet) above sea level. Named after the ancient Dian tribe that once inhabited its shores, Dianchi Lake boasts a water capacity of 15,700 million cubic meters.

Referred to as Kunming Lake as well, Dianchi Lake is embraced by verdant hills, with Jinma Hill to the east, Biji Hill to the west, Baihe Hill (White Crane Hill) to the south, and Sheshan Hill (Snake Hill) to the north. The fertile shores enjoy a pleasant climate and abundant rivers, facilitating agricultural activities in the surrounding area.

With roots dating back to the Warring States period, when the Dian State was established in the region, Dianchi Lake holds a rich historical significance. Its crystalline waters resemble a glistening pearl set amidst mountainous terrain, reflecting the azure skies above and the majestic peaks that encircle it.
