Liujiaxia Dam is located in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, 1 km southwest of Yongjing County Gansu Province, 75 km away from Lanzhou City. It is a large-scale hydropower project designed, constructed and built by China during the first five-year Plan period and completed in 1974. It is the seventh step power station in the upper Yellow River development plan, and has many functions such as power generation, flood control, irrigation, aquaculture, shipping and tourism. The reservoir is located in the plateau canyon, known as the “plateau pearl”, the scenery is spectacular in this area.

Liujiaxia dam has a capacity of 5.7 billion cubic meters and a water area of more than 130 square kilometers, extending 54 kilometers from southwest to northeast. The dam is 147 meters high and 840 meters long on the right bank of the dam, and the building has a spillway 700 meters long and 80 meters wide. Below the dam is the power station building, with five large generating units lined up in the underground hall, with a total installed capacity of 1.225 million kilowatts and an annual power is 5.7 billion kilowatts.
