Located in the eastern islands of the Zhoushan Archipelago in Zhejiang Province, Putuoshan Mountain (Mount Putuo) is revered as the dwelling place of Avalokitesvara and holds a significant place among the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains in China, alongside Mount Emei in Sichuan, Mount Jiuhua in Anhui, and Mount Wutai in Shanxi. Renowned for its breathtaking blend of mountainous landscapes and coastal vistas, Putuoshan Mountain has earned distinctions such as being recognized as a National AAAAA Scenic Area and acclaimed as both the Buddhist Kingdom on the Sea and the Sacred Land of the South China Sea.
The religious significance of Mount Putuo dates back to the Qin Dynasty (221 – 201 BC), when Taoist practitioners engaged in alchemical pursuits on its slopes, leaving behind relic sites that endure to this day. However, it was during the Tang Dynasty (847 AD) that the mountain gained prominence as a site associated with Avalokitesvara, with one foreign monk purportedly experiencing divine manifestations in Chaoyin Cave. Subsequent centuries, particularly during the Song and Yuan Dynasties, witnessed the rapid development and prosperity of Putuoshan Mountain. At its zenith, it was hailed as the preeminent Buddhist Kingdom in China, boasting four grand temples, 106 smaller temples, 139 hermitages, and a monastic community comprising 4,654 monks.
