The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum stands as a majestic tribute to the “Father of Modern China” and the pioneering figure of the Chinese Revolution, Sun Yat-sen (孙中山). Nestled on the south slope of the Purple Mountain, this awe-inspiring mausoleum boasts a design both grand and inspiring.

Construction of the mausoleum began in 1926 and was completed in 1929, covering an impressive area of 80,000 square meters (about 20 acres). Positioned to overlook a fertile plain and nestled against the verdant mountainside, it occupies a serene location close to the Xiaoling Mausoleum to the west and Linggu Temple to the east. Sun Yat-sen himself expressed a wish to be laid to rest near Purple Mountain, making the location of the mausoleum all the more poignant.

Recognized for its architectural significance and historical importance, the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum has received prestigious accolades, including being listed as a “National AAAAA Tourist Attraction” in 2006 and recognized as an “Architectural Heritage in the 20th Century in China” in 2016.

For visitors to Nanjing, the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is a must-see destination. Whether paying homage to the legacy of this great leader or simply appreciating the beauty of its surroundings, a visit to this iconic site offers a profound and unforgettable experience.
