There is a Chinese saying, “morning bell and evening drum,” which describes the ancient Chinese tradition of striking the bell in the bell tower and beating the drum at the drum tower to announce the time of the day. The Xian Drum Tower, located about 200 meters away from the Xian Bell Tower across the Bell and Drum Tower square, is the sister building of the Bell Tower.

Built in 1380 during the Ming dynasty, this timber-brick drum tower is almost the same age as the Bell Tower and, like its counterpart, does not contain any iron nails. Standing at about 34 meters (112 feet) high and 53 meters long (172 feet), covering an area of 1998.8 square meters, it consists of two floors, primarily in red and yellow colors. The roof is adorned with gray tiles with trimmed edges, while the foundation lacks any additional decorations.

As night falls, the entire drum tower takes on a magnificent and solemn appearance. From atop the tower, visitors can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the Xian center spread out below them.
