Your driver will pick you up from your Xi’an hotel lobby and transfer you to Xi’an Railway Station. Catch the morning bullet train to Pingyao Old Town— the 3-hour high-speed ride lets you sit back and enjoy the passing scenery of northern China’s countryside.
Midday: Local Lunch in Pingyao
Upon arrival in Pingyao, meet your friendly local tour guide and head to a local restaurant for a tasty lunch, featuring Pingyao’s signature dishes like Pingyao beef and hand-pulled noodles.
Afternoon: Pingyao Ancient City Walking Tour
Accompanied by your guide, start exploring Pingyao Ancient City—founded during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 – 771 BC) and rebuilt in 1370, it is one of China’s four best-preserved ancient cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Wander along Ming Qing Street, lined with shops selling local handicrafts like paper-cuts and lacquerware.
- Visit Rishengchang, the site of China’s first-ever draft bank, to learn about the glory of ancient Chinese financial history.
- Step into Pingyao Ancient Government Office, a well-preserved feudal official residence that showcases the bureaucracy system of ancient China.
Late Afternoon: Optional Attractions (Time Permitting)
If time allows, don’t miss the Temple of City God and Pingyao Confucian Temple, or browse through the city’s theme museums to dive deeper into local culture. You can discuss your preferred spots with your guide to customize the itinerary.

Your guide and driver will pick you up from your Pingyao hotel in the morning, then head to Wang Family Compound—a luxurious residence built between 1762 and 1811 by the descendants of the prominent Wang clan. It is not only a masterpiece of ancient residential architecture but also a living museum of architectural art, adorned with exquisite stone, wood, and brick carvings everywhere. With 231 courtyards and 2,078 houses in total, the compound’s grand scale and delicate craftsmanship will leave you amazed.
Midday: Local Lunch
Enjoy another authentic Pingyao lunch at a local restaurant, savoring more regional flavors before continuing your exploration.
Afternoon: Shuanglin Temple Exploration
Head to Shuanglin Temple, located on the outskirts of Pingyao Ancient City. Reputed as the “Museum of Ancient Painted Sculptures”, the temple houses over 2,000 vivid colorful sculptures dating back to the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 as an integral part of Pingyao’s cultural heritage.
Late Afternoon: Tour Conclusion & Departure
After the tour, your guide and driver will drop you off at Pingyao Railway Station. You can choose to end your tour in Pingyao, or take the bullet train back to Xi’an, or head to Beijing on your own.
Note: Guests take the train independently; your local English-speaking guide will accompany you for the two-day sightseeing in Pingyao.
