Day 1 Xining Arrival
Welcome to Xining, capital of Qinghai Province. It sits at an altitude of 2,261 meters. Thin air may affect visitors new to high elevations. Stay hydrated and take it slow to acclimate. This helps avoid altitude sickness.
Beyond this small challenge lies a city of breathtaking plateau scenery and rich ethnic culture. It’s the perfect gateway to an authentic northwest China adventure. Settle in at your chosen hotel and rest up for the days ahead.
Day 2 Xining – Qinghai Lake – Xining (B, L)
After breakfast, hop in your private vehicle. Drive 150 kilometers to Qinghai Lake via Huangyuan and Riyue Mountain. The journey is a delight for the eyes. Lush green grasslands stretch endlessly. Clear blue skies and fluffy white clouds hang overhead. Scattered herds graze lazily below. The ever-changing views feel like flipping through a photo gallery.
Stop at Erlangjian Scenic Area to soak in Qinghai Lake’s beauty. This is China’s largest inland saltwater lake. Its serene blue waters meet the distant snow-capped mountains. The tranquil setting captivates every visitor. Walk the lakeside plank road. Breathe in the fresh lake breeze. Snap photos of the postcard-perfect scenery. In the evening, drive back to Xining.
Day 3 Xining – Tongren – Xiahe (B, L)
After breakfast, drive 165 kilometers to Tongren, a hidden gem in southeastern Qinghai’s highlands.
Longwu Monastery (Rongwo Monastery)
Kick off your exploration at Longwu Monastery, one of the three most influential Tibetan monasteries in the Amdo region with a history of over 700 years, a sacred hub for spiritual practice and cultural preservation in Tibetan Buddhism. Wander its quiet courtyards. Admire traditional Tibetan architecture. Listen to the faint chants of monks. It’s a peaceful escape from the hustle of daily life.
Wutong Monastery
Next, head to Wutong Monastery, a standout spot in a local Tibetan village and the birthplace and vibrant center of the intricate, vivid Regong Art. This unique art form has thrived here for centuries, rooted in the monastery’s spiritual atmosphere. Marvel at the delicate Thangka paintings and butter sculptures crafted by local artists.
In the afternoon, continue your drive to Xiahe. Check into your hotel for the night.
Day 4 Xiahe – Labrang Monastery – Linxia (B, L)
Start your day with a visit to Labrang Monastery, one of the six great Gelug (Yellow Hat) monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism and a highly influential spiritual center outside the Tibet Autonomous Region. Explore its grand halls and prayer rooms. Watch monks engage in traditional religious debates. Feel the profound spiritual atmosphere of this historic site.
In the afternoon, take a trip to Sangke Grassland. This is a pastoral paradise. Tibetan nomads graze cattle and sheep on lush green grass. Clear blue skies and white clouds frame the idyllic scene. It captures the essence of Tibetan pastoral life. Take a leisurely walk. Snap photos of the harmonious landscape. Later, drive to Linxia and settle in for the night.
Day 5 Bingling Temple – Lanzhou Departure (B)
After breakfast, drive 2.5 hours to Bingling Temple, a Buddhist cave complex steeped in over 1,600 years of history and accessible via a 1.5-hour drive to Liujiaxia Dam on the upper Yellow River. First, take a boat ride along the river. Enjoy views of the towering canyon walls.
After disembarking, walk a few minutes to the temple entrance. Explore the ancient grottoes carved into the rocks. Admire well-preserved frescoes and stone sculptures. These artworks are nestled in a narrow valley by the Yellow River. The blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes this a truly unique sacred site.
