    Nestled in Lingshi County, Shanxi – 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Pingyao Ancient City – this grand architectural complex dates back roughly 250 years. First constructed between 1762 and 1811 by descendants of the Wang clan, the luxurious residence stands out for its immense scale and stunning ornamental details. Resembling a mini walled city, it features over 200 courtyards, each boasting unique characteristics. Intricate carvings adorn wooden doors, window frames, staircases, and stonework throughout the compound.

    In the afternoon, the tour proceeds to Zhangbi Ancient Fortress, where you’ll explore its maze-like underground tunnels. Unlike traditional compounds and ancient cities, this site offers a unique glimpse beyond Shanxi’s merchant culture. To fend off enemy invasions, ancient Chinese ancestors leveraged the area’s geographical advantages to build a 10,000-meter-long three-story underground military tunnel network. A rich complex of historical relics, tombs, residences, and tunnels, the fortress is most famous for its intriguing labyrinthine underground passages.

    After lunch, you’ll begin your return journey to Pingyao, with a stop at Shuanglin Temple – a site that retains its timeless, ancient charm unlike many other temples.
    A serene, tranquil, and beautiful ancient temple, it is one of Pingyao’s three treasures and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. Hailed as the “Museum of Ancient Painted Sculptures,” the temple houses an impressive 2,056 colorful Buddhist sculptures, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of artisans from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. The Thousand-Hand Guanyin sculpture is undoubtedly the most captivating highlight.
