Delve into Hainan’s rich history as you explore Yazhou Ancient City, a site brimming with cultural significance and centuries-old stories. The city’s ancient walls trace their roots to the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1297): initially built with earth and grass in 1198, they were later reconstructed with bricks. From the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC) until October 1954—when the administrative center moved to the former fishing village of Sanya—Yazhou served as the political and economic heart of southern Hainan.

The city also boasts deep connections to prominent historical figures: From the Song Dynasty (960–1279) onward, numerous renowned politicians and writers were exiled here from mainland China. During the Tang Dynasty (618–907), the famous monk Jianzhen attempted five times to sail to Japan but failed; his fifth voyage was thwarted by a typhoon, washing his group ashore near Yazhou’s Ningyuan River. During his stay, he helped rebuild Dayuan Temple and left a wealth of Buddhist scriptures for the local community. In the late Song Dynasty, Huang Daopo—revered as the “ancestor of China’s textile industry”—resided in Shuinan Village, Yazhou, for nearly 30 years. She learned advanced textile techniques from local residents before returning to her hometown (modern-day Huajing Town, Shanghai) to share her knowledge, revolutionizing the industry.
