Welcome to Hohhot—the “Green City” and capital of Inner Mongolia! If you arrive at Hohhot’s airport or train station before 12:00 PM, your dedicated driver and guide will greet you at the exit and escort you to the city center. Spend the afternoon delving into the region’s cultural heritage with visits to the Inner Mongolia Natural Museum (or Inner Mongolia Museum, if reopened) and the iconic Dazhao Temple (Silver Buddha Temple).
Note: As of April 23, 2025, the Inner Mongolia Museum is closed for relocation to a new building and is expected to reopen soon. We will arrange a visit to the Inner Mongolia Natural Museum instead.
Stop 1: Inner Mongolia Museum / Inner Mongolia Natural Museum (Closed on Mondays)
Founded in 1957, the Inner Mongolia Museum is a national first-class museum housing over 150,000 artifacts—an “encyclopedia” of Inner Mongolia’s ecological evolution, culture, and history. Its collections shine with ancient organism fossils (including dinosaur remains) and cultural relics from the Silk Road and northern ethnic groups (Mongolian, Khitan, Xiongnu). Trace the region’s story from prehistoric times, the Bronze Age, and Warring States period through the Wei-Jin, Liao-Jin, Mongol-Yuan, Ming-Qing dynasties to the modern era.

Stop 2: Dazhao Temple (Silver Buddha Temple)
Founded in 1579 by Alatan Khan—leader of the Mongolian Tumote tribe during the Ming Dynasty and a reincarnation of Kublai Khan—Dazhao Temple is Hohhot’s oldest Tibetan Buddhist temple and the largest Gelugpa (Yellow Sect) holy site in Inner Mongolia. Its name “Silver Buddha Temple” honors a 30,000-tael pure silver Sakyamuni statue, consecrated by the 3rd Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso (a reincarnation of Buton Rinchen Drub).
The temple is celebrated for its “Three Wonders”: the silver Buddha, intricate dragon carvings, and well-preserved Ming Dynasty murals. Its layout follows a north-south central axis, blending Han, Tibetan, and Mongolian architectural styles—including imperial yellow glazed tiles (a privilege reserved for royal buildings), drawing architecture enthusiasts and photographers worldwide.
In the Qing Dynasty, Dazhao Temple served as the ancestral temple of Emperor Kangxi, whose tablet (and that of his father, Emperor Shunzhi) is still enshrined here. Inside the main hall, admire the 400-year-old silver Buddha (crafted by Nepalese artisans), a 10-meter-tall golden coiled dragon, and precious relics: a dragon-phoenix-peacock umbrella, pearl octagonal palace lanterns, a wealth deity statue gifted by Emperor Kangxi, and rare Ming-Qing thangkas.

As the closest grassland to Hohhot, Xilamuren is a sprawling expanse of emerald green that ranks among Inner Mongolia’s most beautiful and well-loved destinations. Day 3: Xilamuren Grassland to Baotou | Xilamuren Grassland Sunrise (Optional), Wudangzhao Monastery (“Potala Palace on the Grassland”)
This morning, you may opt to wake up early (around 4:00 a.m.) to catch the spectacular sunrise over Xilamuren Grassland—this activity is optional. After that, you’ll travel to Baotou’s Wudangzhao Monastery (a 180-kilometer journey taking approximately 3 hours). Historically, this monastery served as the residence of the most influential Lama in Inner Mongolia.
Wudangzhao Monastery (also referred to as Wudangzhao Temple) ranks among China’s Four Great Tibetan Buddhist Monasteries of the Gelugpa sect (known as the “Yellow Hat” sect). The other three are Tibet’s Potala Palace, Gansu’s Labrang Monastery, and Qinghai’s Kumbum Monastery. Nicknamed the “Potala Palace on the Grassland,” it is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Inner Mongolia. Established during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty (1662–1722) by the first Living Buddha, Lobsang Jigme Gyatso, the monastery was designed after Tibet’s Tashilhunpo Monastery. Over the course of several centuries, it was expanded to reach its current size.
Here, you’ll encounter the monastery’s distinctive Tibetan Buddhist architectural style, which lacks a central axis. Its magnificent halls are scattered irregularly across a south-facing slope in a valley, stretching 1.5 kilometers. The monastery complex comprises six main prayer halls (there were originally eight), three residences for Living Buddhas, and a reliquary hall that houses stupas of past lamas. Covering an area of over 300 acres, it contains more than 2,500 rooms. Inside the halls, you’ll be amazed by the elaborate murals, thangka paintings, and Buddha statues. Along the paths, you’ll also see prayer wheels, white stupas, and mani stone mounds. Additionally, a deer park offers the chance for close, friendly interactions with deer.
If time allows, hike up the southern hill for a panoramic view of Wudangzhao Monastery. During the annual temple fair (held from the 25th day of the 7th lunar month to the 1st day of the 8th lunar month), monks conduct various rituals, including the Thangka Unveiling ceremony, scripture chanting, and sacred Cham dances. Come and explore this Buddhist sanctuary nestled in the heart of the grasslands—an inspiring spiritual journey awaits you.
Finally, you’ll proceed to Baotou for an overnight stay (approximately 70 kilometers away). Baotou, also known as “Deer City” (鹿城 in Chinese), derives its name from the Mongolian word “Baoketu,” which means “a place where deer reside.” As the city with the largest urban population in Inner Mongolia, Baotou is situated at the foot of the Yinshan Mountains and along the banks of the Yellow River. Boasting abundant mineral resources, Baotou is also renowned as the “Steel Capital of the Grassland” (草原钢城) and the “Capital of Rare Earth” (稀土之都).

- Northern Weapon City (for military enthusiasts, self-funded; 北方兵器城): A park themed around artillery, where you can explore a variety of decommissioned weapons—many of which are touchable. These include armored vehicles, artillery pieces, fighter jets, and missiles. The park combines patriotism education, national defense education, military culture, and entertainment.
Rest well in Baotou tonight, as you’ll be preparing for your upcoming desert adventure at Kubuqi’s Resonant Sand Bay (Sounding Sand Bay).
Desert Travel Tips
- Sunscreen, sand protection, and hydration: It’s recommended to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, and protective clothing. High-top shoes are a must to keep sand out. Take measures to protect your phone and camera from sand damage. Since the desert is extremely dry, each person should carry more than 2 liters of water.
- Desert clothing guidelines: In summer, wear light, long-sleeved clothes to shield yourself from UV rays. In winter, bring a down jacket—there is a significant temperature difference between day and night in the desert.
- Safety and environmental protection tips: Do not go into uninhabited areas alone. Follow the safety rules for all activities, and be careful when on steep sand dunes. Do not litter; help protect the desert ecosystem.
- Seasonal considerations: In summer (July–August), you can enjoy the desert’s natural pools. In winter, there are fewer visitors, and the snow-covered desert offers a unique landscape—but some activities may be closed.

Day 4: Baotou → Kubuqi Desert → Ordos | Resonant Sand Bay & Mausoleum of Genghis Khan
Rise early to beat the crowds and head to Resonant Sand Bay (Xiangshawan), which opens at 8:30 AM. Located just 50 km from Baotou (a 1–1.5 hour drive), this desert paradise offers a morning of thrilling activities. After lunch, journey 120 km (2 hours) to the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan—we recommend arriving before 3:00 PM, as the site closes at 5:00 PM.
✅ Important Note: This tour allocates half a day for desert activities. If you wish to fully immerse yourself in Resonant Sand Bay’s offerings, consider extending your itinerary with an extra half-day on Day 5, allowing you to explore the desert at a leisurely pace before visiting the mausoleum.

Nestled in the Kubuqi Desert—China’s seventh-largest desert—Resonant Sand Bay is known as “China’s Desert Disneyland” and ranks among the country’s Four Singing Sand Dunes (named for the melodic hum produced by wind blowing over the sand). Once dubbed the “Sea of Death” for its harsh, barren landscape, Kubuqi has undergone a remarkable ecological transformation: decades of reforestation and solar energy projects have boosted vegetation coverage, turning parts of the desert into a “Sea of Green.” Today, it stands as one of China’s top desert destinations, blending adventure, natural beauty, and sustainable progress.
Resonant Sand Bay features two main islands, each offering unique experiences (please confirm ticket inclusions and activity fees with our team in advance):
- Xiansha Island (“Desert Disneyland”): Perfect for thrill-seekers, with activities like sand yachting, rail bikes, Polaris ATVs, high-altitude zip lines, camel rides, and a roller coaster. Visit the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan
After your desert adventure, pay homage to one of history’s greatest leaders at the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan (1162–1227)—founder of the Mongol Empire. Genghis Khan united scattered Mongolian tribes, expanding his empire from the Pacific Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea (encompassing Central Asia and parts of Eastern Europe), creating the largest contiguous empire of his time. His legacy laid the foundation for China’s Yuan Dynasty (1279–1368) and the reunification of the nation.
Revered by Mongolian culture enthusiasts worldwide, the mausoleum’s exact location of Genghis Khan’s actual tomb remains a mystery due to the Mongolian custom of “secret burial.” Instead, the site houses a symbolic relic: camel hair said to have absorbed his last breath, representing his eternal soul—cherished for centuries.
Since 1227, the Da’erhute tribe (descendants of Genghis Khan’s personal guards) has faithfully cared for the mausoleum. If your visit coincides with the Spring Ceremony (Tsagaansurek, or “milk sacrifice”), you’ll witness sacred shamanistic rituals organized by the tribe—offering a profound spiritual connection to Genghis Khan’s legacy.
The mausoleum complex, designed in traditional Mongolian architecture, spans 13.6 acres and includes the Tomb Complex and Donglian Scenic Area.
