    • Tang Dynasty monk Jianzhen washed ashore here after a typhoon. It ruined his fifth voyage to Japan. He rebuilt Dayuan Temple and left precious Buddhist scriptures.
    • Late Song Dynasty’s Huang Daopo, China’s “textile ancestor,” lived here for 30 years. She learned advanced weaving techniques locally. She later revolutionized the nation’s textile industry.
    • From the Song Dynasty onward, many renowned politicians and writers were exiled here. They left a lasting mark on the city’s culture.
