Carved into a 2-kilometer-long cliff face along the Yellow River, the grottoes are divided into upper and lower sections, their remote location making them both strategically significant and historically difficult to access.
    Dating back to the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316), the site comprises 34 grottoes, 149 shrines, 694 stone statues, and 82 clay sculptures. One of its most precious artifacts is an ink inscription in Grotto No. 169, the earliest known preface found in any Chinese grotto to date.
