        Your private tour starts at 8:00 am. Your guide picks you up from your central Lanzhou hotel.

        Head to the railway station for a 1.5-hour bullet train to Tianshui. The ride is quick and comfortable for your day trip.

        Upon arriving in Tianshui, transfer directly to Maijishan Grottoes. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China’s Four Great Grottoes, first built in 384 AD and expanded over ten dynasties.

        The grottoes are carved into sheer Danxia landform cliffs. The mountain is shaped like a wheat stack, giving the site its name.

        194 caves remain intact, holding over 7,200 exquisite clay sculptures, stone carvings and murals. They showcase the evolution of ancient Chinese Buddhist art.

        Traverse narrow cliffside wooden plank walkways. Get up close to lifelike statues, including the famous “Smile of the East” Buddha.

        Enjoy sweeping views of the lush, picturesque mountain scenery below as you explore.

        After the grotto tour, transfer back to Tianshui Railway Station. Catch the return bullet train to Lanzhou.
