The Overhanging Great Wall, also recognized as the Xuanbi Great Wall, stands as a remarkable historical monument situated 8 kilometers from the Jiayuguan Pass Fort and 14 kilometers from the city center. Once an integral component of the Jiayuguan Pass, it formed a crucial link in the defensive network of ancient China, connecting with the fortification.

Over the course of more than four and a half centuries, much of the Overhanging Great Wall has succumbed to the passage of time, with many sections now lost to history. However, a resilient portion endures, spanning 750 meters in length, with its rugged structure clinging to cliffs, rising to a height of 150 meters. Unlike the Great Wall sections found in Beijing, the Overhanging Great Wall was constructed using loess soil, a testament to the resourcefulness of its builders in an environment marked by scarcity of water.

Hiking along this awe-inspiring stretch of the Great Wall offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in history and marvel at the ingenuity of ancient engineering. Despite its precipitous location, ascending the Overhanging Great Wall typically requires only about thirty minutes, rewarding adventurers with breathtaking views and a profound sense of connection to China’s storied past.
